At its Spring session this past April, the Holy Synod released a statement on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. The Synod encourages all OCA dioceses and institutions to mark this anniversary, in these words:
The Orthodox Church in America is at home in this land — fully engaged in its common life — and yet her citizenship is ultimately in heaven, her culture the culture of the Kingdom. It is precisely from this position that she can offer something to American society that no merely political or ideological force can provide, the presence of the living God.
Please find attached from His Grace, our Bishop Benedict, an introductory letter, and petitions that all our parishes are requested to offer during divine services this coming weekend. Consider also utilizing them in any local celebrations that may be occurring in the coming days.
